Raw cocoa during pregnancy

Pleasure in moderation, knowledge in the heart

As new life grows inside you, your view of many things changes - including your diet. Women keep asking us: "Is raw cocoa allowed during pregnancy?" The answer is: Yes, you can enjoy it - as long as you keep a few things in mind.

Ingredients of raw cocoa

Raw cocoa is rich in magnesium, iron, potassium and zinc, contains many antioxidants and the amino acid tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin - our happiness hormone. This has a mood-lifting and nourishing effect. But cocoa also contains:

  • Theobromineapprox. 120-140 mg per cup (15 g powder) - gently stimulating and vasodilating.
  • Caffeineapprox. 15-25 mg per cup - significantly less than coffee, but relevant as it also reaches your baby via the placenta.
  • Histaminecan cause headaches or nausea in sensitive women.
  • Oxalic acidIn high quantities, it inhibits calcium absorption, which is important for bones.

Risks and limits during pregnancy

Placenta & caffeineCaffeine goes straight to the baby, which only breaks it down slowly. The recommendation is not to consume more than 200 mg of caffeine per day - this corresponds to about 8-10 cups of cocoa, but only 2 cups of coffee, for example.

Excessive doses: Ceremonial quantities of 30-50 g of raw cocoa can contain up to 100 mg of caffeine and over 400 mg of theobromine - that is too much during pregnancy.

Histamine & oxalic acid: Hardly a problem with normal consumption, but cocoa can trigger intolerances in sensitive women.

A recipe that's good for you

Pregnancy cocoa "Nourishing Mama"

Ingredients (for 1 cup, approx. 200 ml):

  • 15 g raw cocoa (2 heaped teaspoons)
  • 200 ml oat or almond milk (or cow's milk for extra calcium)
  • ½ tsp cinnamon (stabilises the blood sugar)
  • ¼ tsp cardamom (gentle digestive aid)
  • 1 small slice of fresh ginger (helps against nausea, gently strengthens the immune system)
  • 1 tsp honey or date puree (natural sweetener)
  • Optional: a pinch of vanilla (mood-lifting)

Preparation:

  1. Carefully heat the milk (do not boil).
  2. Stir in the cocoa until creamy.
  3. Add the spices and leave to infuse for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the ginger slice and sweeten with honey or date purée.
  5. Drink in peace - preferably in the morning or afternoon.

With 15 g of raw cocoa you stay well below the safe limit and at the same time benefit from the minerals, antioxidants and the gentle, heart-opening effect of cocoa.

CONCLUSION

Raw cocoa can also accompany you during pregnancy - as a nourishing ritual that strengthens body and soul. Just make sure you don't exceed 15 g per day, opt for organic quality and listen to your body. This way you can enjoy the connection with cocoa and your baby to the full.

Who knew that 15g of raw cocoa could trigger so much happiness - a small dose of happiness hormone directly into the baby, so to speak.
